Implantology

The replacement of one or more lost teeth is now possible with the insertion of a titanium screw, made of the same material used in orthopedics for the stabilization of fractured bones . The implant surfaces used in dentistry are designed to promote osteointegration, the close connection between bone and implant that occurs with the new bone addition around the screw after insertion. The healing process is sped up by implant designs, a more appropriate site-specific bone anatomy and microroughness of the surface obtained with sophisticated treatments of acidification and purification.
The titanium screw replaces the root of the lost tooth, and after having transferred the implant position to the laboratory, the morphology of the missing tooth will be shaped over it.
In case of edentulous patients, implants can be used to create an anchor for a denture that otherwise would be little retentive, or even to create an entire fix dental arch.
According to the technique of implant adopted, Transmucosal or Submerged, little surgery may be needed on the gum that covers the head of the implant, before taking the dental impression.
Considering implant treatment, the reasons that led to edentulism can not be overlooked: particularly, patients who have lost teeth for periodontal disease should first be provided with proper care in order to stop the inflammatory process responsible for the bone loss. While implants in fact cannot be attacked by caries, they are not immune to the bacteria that cause periodontitis: scientific research reports lesser successful treatment in patients with untreated periodontal disease.
